Meta Takes Multiple Spots in the Most Popular Apps (2021) List

With the year wrapping to a close, it is only fitting to look back at the events of the year past. Thus, Apptopia, a consultation company, has come out with its ranked list of the most popular apps of 2021 globally.

Before beginning with the list, it should be kept in mind that there were some minor differences in the process of compiling ratings for apps globally and for the United States specifically. The list of most popular apps globally in 2021 includes apps that were downloaded the most number of times on both iOS and Android. With that, let us begin with the rankings of the most popular apps globally (2021).

Coming at number one is TikTok, the social media app that is the most talked about on social media. Ranks two, three, and four are occupied by Meta’s Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp respectively, apps that have become staples in these lists. Keeping with the social media theme, Telegram bagged rank five and Snapchat rank six, with Zoom, Messenger, CapCut and Spotify filling ranks seven through ten. Notably, four of the ten apps on the list belong to Meta. The surprising new entry in the list is of the vido editing app CapCut, a software owned by ByteDance, who are also the owners of TikTok. The tools in CapCut are optimized specifically for editing videos for TikTok.

As for the US, the list varies in some places, with Spotify and Telegram not making it to the top ten, but instead making room for apps like CashApp, YouTube, and HBO Max. Unsurprisingly, TikTok has retained its position as rank one in the US as well, a spot that was previously occupied by Google. Following TikTok come apps like Snapchat, Instagram, CashApp, and Zoom. Meta’s Messenger, Facebook, and WhatsApp occupy ranks sixth, seventh, and eighth, and the list is wrapped by Google’s YouTube, and at rank ten, HBO Max.
