Google To Increase The Free Storage Deadline For Some Of Its Apps

The free storage of Google was supposed to end in June this year but Google has now extended the limit to February 2022. But this extension is only for some existing Google apps like Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, Forms, or Jamboard files limited to WorkSpace and GSuite users. For personal Google account holders, the free storage will be available till June 2021 only as decided earlier. Google in a blog post said, “High-quality photos will count towards the Drive quota beginning June 1, 2021. There is no change to this timeline.” It further continued, “Any newly created Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, Forms, or Jamboard files will count towards storage. Existing files within these products will not count towards storage, unless they’re modified on or after February 1, 2022.”

Google has itself guessed “that the majority of users will not be affected by these changes.” Although, this is a nice cue for the June 2021 limit for free, unlimited Google Storage. As of now, Google gives its users 15 GB of free storage across Drive, Gmail, and photos. When this 15 GB limit is crossed, it starts charging money.

Google has already made it clear that if the original quality videos and photos are uploaded then the changes will not make any difference. It will be counted for the free storage provided to the users’ Google Account. However, if the user wants to upload the photos or videos in high quality then they will be counted for the storage of the users.

Google has decided to give new admin tools to the Google Workspace admins so that they can organize the storage and decide how to use it before this new feature goes live. Google noted, “We’ve decided to delay the count of Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, Forms, or Jamboard files count toward storage quotas until that tooling is in place.”

In December, Google had declared that a 50 percent discount will be offered to 10TB, 20TB, and 30 TB plans of Google One. This is for additional storage; the basic plan is still priced at Rs.130 a month which makes it to Rs.1,300 for a year. In the basic plan, you will be having 100GB of storage. You can also share this storage plan with your friends. Five members can be invited to share this. Apart from this, there is a 200GB plan which is for Rs. 210 per month, and a 2TB plan which is for Rs.650 per month.
