When Apple launched its Map service back in 2012, it was quite the disaster. It had many major issues including inaccurate directions, wrongly labelled landmarks and 3D rendering problems. In fact, Tim Cook himself wasn’t very pleased with this service.

Ever since then Apple has been putting in a great deal of efforts to improve their Maps service and these efforts have finally paid off. A recent report by Associated Press states that Apple Maps is now used three times more than its “next leading competitor” on iPhone and iPad, with more than 5 billion map-related requests every week. Google Maps Get A New Update For Android

Google Maps for Android is getting an interesting update in its version 9.1, which will allow the users to share My Maps. With My Maps, users could create custom maps which they can now share, owing to the update. There is, however, a provision to hide the elements in the interface as the unnecessary items like the search bar will be taken away from the full-screen mode. So while the search bar and quick-launch for directions are not necessarily the things one would want to share, they can be simply removed with a single tap on screen. Apple Launches Maps Connect For Small Businesses

Apple has launched something that will truly help them take their maps business to the next level – small businesses can now get listed on Apple Maps which will make them searchable on Maps. With the new web service called as Maps Connect small business owners would be able to manage their listings on Apple Maps. The service also has an iBeacon-powered indoor mapping tool for setting up indoor positioning in select areas. With Maps Connect, companies can enter their own listings and verify via a phone call or email address. The indoor mapping tool also allows to setup interior views of their businesses on Apple Maps. The locations that have Wi-Fi throughout the building and at least 1 million visitors per year can only currently use the tool for indoor mapping. Read More

QA Manager Responsible For iOS 8.0.1 Was Also Behind Maps Fiasco

Bloomberg has looked into what really went wrong with iOS 8.0.1 and who is accountable for the whole mess. Their report points the finger at a QA manager who in the past had overseen quality control for Apple Maps project before its launch.

According to Bloomberg,

The same person at Apple was in charge of catching problems before both products were released. […] the mid-level manager overseeing quality assurance for Apple’s iOS mobile-software group, was also in charge of quality control for maps, according to people familiar with Apple’s management structure.
