Apple is focusing on audio news and local news with the introduction of new features to Apple News and Apple News+. It’s launching its own daily audio news briefing called “Apple News Today”, co-hosted by Apple News editors Shumita Basu and Duarte Geraldino. The podcasts will run Monday through Friday in the mornings and will be available on Apple News and Apple Podcasts for free in the US, Canada, Australia and the UK. The podcast will cover the day’s news very briefly in under 10 minutes. Additionally, Apple News+ subscribers in the US will be able to listen to audio versions of print stories published by some of the best magazines such as Esquire, Essence, GQ, TIME, NY Magazine and Vogue among others and newspapers including the Los Angeles Times and The Wall Street Journal. Apple plans to produce about 20 audio stories per week narrated by professionals voice actors. Apple is adding a new Audio tab to its news app, where the users can find News Today podcast and audio stories. Interestingly, both the new audio features will be available on CarPlay as well to let users listen to news while driving.
Apple will give more attention to local news for users in select US cities – San Francisco Bay Area, Houston, L.A., and New York, with plans to expand. It introduced a new curated local news section available in Apple News and Apple News+ which will feature news from various local publishers and a major publisher in each city.
According to Apple, “Apple News draws over 125 million monthly active users in the US, the UK, Australia, and Canada, and has revolutionized how people access news from all their favorite sources. Apple News+ is a single subscription that provides access to written and audio content from hundreds of the world’s top magazines and major newspapers”.
