Airtel and Vodafone in the Indian telecom sector are facing stiff competition from Reliance Jio and their future is very much uncertain as of now. After Airtel launched the VoWiFi service in the country, Reliance has also launched the very same service to add up more customers to its already extensive user base.
The service has rolled out in India gradually starting with a few select regions and will be available throughout the country soon. The VoWiFi service basically will allow users to place calls via WiFi when they are in their homes and office and there won’t be any added charges for this service. But the important thing to note here is that the user should have an active Jio plan to make use of this WiFi calling service.
Airtel had launched the WiFi in December 2019 in the Delhi/NCR region and then expanded to Kolkata and Mumbai. Reliance had planned for a complete rollout in India as per their initial plans but now the company will release this feature in a phased manner starting from next week.
Users who are new to VoWiFi service will be able to effortlessly switch from LTE to WiFi for voice calling when they are using it with the WiFi available in their home/office. In addition to this, users will also have the ability to place video calls over another service called ViWiFi (Video over WiFi) which will be rolling out soon.
Jio VoWiFi will work on most of the mobile smartphones from Apple, Google, Motorola, Samsung, Vivo, Xiaomi and other brands.
