MacBook hardware has not changed much in the past few years except the replacement of the butterfly keyboard with the magic keyboard on the new 16-inch MacBook Pro. A new patent from Apple has emerged which shows to have a colorful backlight keyboard on a MacBook that would not only be used for illumination effect but also for receiving the feedback of the user.
The patent was published the company on 7th January 2020 with the United Patent and Trademark Office. The patent is titled “Mixed input lighting using multiple light sources with switchable operational state”. Although color-lit keyboards are not new in the market as companies like Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, Dell, Razer already have them on their laptops, Apple will be making use of this technology in a newer way as they are know for new innovations with many of their products.
Apple described the backlight keyboard in the new patent as follows: Variable internal illumination of keys may provide improved user experience and information output. The light sources for the variable illumination of the keys, or other input devices, can be provided from within the keys by light emitting diodes (LEDs). It is especially advantageous if the internal illumination is provided by micro-LEDs (.mu.LEDs). To provide improved user experience and increase potential for feedback to a user, it would be helpful to have keys of keyboards, or other input devices, with individually controllable variable internal illumination.
Further, the illumination can be controlled by the user based on different color tones and hues and this technology could also find its use on electronic devices like cell phones, instrument displays, tablets and desktop computers.
