An Interview With YATATOY’s Lucas Zanotto – Creator Of Loopimal

LoopimalLoopimal currently sits at the top of the ‘Best New Apps’ editorial list on the App Store. It is an App created for ages of 6 to 8, but enjoyed just as much by the parents of these children. The App is a building App that lets children create with the help of handcrafted animations and sounds that it provides. We got in touch with Mr Lucas Zanotto, who is responsible for developing the App and heads the company that developed the App – YATATOY, and we talked to him about the success of this App, his inspiration and what lies ahead for YATATOY.

TheAppleGoogle: Firstly, we would like to congratulate you on the success and popularity of Loopimal. Did you expect the App to be so popular among parents?

Lucas Zanotto: We were extremely proud and surprised to be Apple’s Editors’ choice nearly worldwide, that was a huge achievement for us.

We are extremely happy to hear all this great feedback and reviews. I was thinking while working on Loopimal, that it is a really fun app, but you can never be sure, if you are just in your own bubble or it is objectively something good. So it is a satisfaction to hear that kids, parent and adult-kids like it.

TheAppleGoogle: This is not your first. You have had the same experience with Drawnimal. Would you like to tell us about that App?

Lucas Zanotto: We launched Drawnimal about 2 years ago. The idea of DRAWNIMAL was to expand your device by using simple tools: pen and paper. Basically, you place your device on a sheet of paper. For each letter of the alphabet, you have simple line instructions to draw around the device. By pressing play, you reveal an animal and get a little animation.

DRAWNIMAL motivates children to draw around the device and encourages them to think outside of the box. The app helps them leave the digital screen with a simple physical interaction.

TheAppleGoogle: What was the inspiration behind YATATOY?

Lucas Zanotto: After the success of Drawnimal we started working on the second app called Miximal, so I thought it would make sense to put these toys under a roof. I was researching a while for the name and decided in the end for YATATOY. The whole look and feel came naturally with the style of the apps.

TheAppleGoogle: Do you get many parents contacting you with ideas and suggestions for new features or even for a new App?

Lucas Zanotto: Parents contact pretty often to give input for extra features they would like to have in the apps.

TheAppleGoogle: Are you working on a new App? Is there any chance of a sneak peek?

Lucas Zanotto: We have a few apps we want to make next. We are still in the process of deciding which is the best follow up and will straight away start to work on that.

TheAppleGoogle: Will YATATOY continue to work only on children’s Apps or is there a plan to branch out?

Lucas Zanotto: The YATATOY brand will always focus on products focusing for kids, maybe it is in a wider perspective seen not just for kids, but also for adults still being kids. We mostly focus on quality and a certain style, that could also find feedback in an adult world.

TheAppleGoogle: Lastly, what advice would you give other developers who want to create a children’s App as successful as Loopimal?

Lucas Zanotto: To try it out. It is a hard market, but it is worth giving it a go. maybe it is always clever to have a backup plan and not put everything into it. It is, in my opinion, too big a risk to take.
