art authorityConfused between a Monet and a Manet? Want to know when Boticelli painted The Birth of Venus? Can’t recall the name of George Seurat’s painting which you use as the wallpaper on your iPhone? To satisfy the curiosity of art lovers all around the world, Open Door Networks, Inc. have designed the brilliant new App — Art Authority. Now all your art-related questions are only a tap away.

Content and Features

Claiming the award for the “Best iPad Reference App”, Art Authority has now been optimised for iPhone. The App is a compilation of over 70,000 works of art by more than 1000 artists of the Western world. The list is categorised by Period, Artist and Location. The Periods cover everything from the ancient times to Romanticism to Contemporary. Each of these is further divided into sub-periods and finally, down to the list of the artists. There is also an extra category dedicated to American art. In addition, there is a “Highlights” section which showcases the most popular pieces of art, like Mona Lisa, Girl with a Pearl Earring, The Scream, etc. Below each image you’ll find basic information, such as the name of the artist, year it was painted, technique, size and its current location.

Looking for Monet’s Water Lillies? Just type it in the Search box and find it instantly. Want to know more about the painting or Monet? Click on the “World” icon at the bottom which will take you to the respective Wikipedia entries. Another great feature of the App is the “Art Near Me” section which looks for art museums or collections based on your current location. Other features include favouriting an art piece, saving it to your “Seen” collection, or posting it to Social Media.

Display and Appearance

Art Authority has a simple and clean UI which lets the users focus on the beauty of all the paintings. All the images are listed as thumbnails so that you can easily identify the ones you’re looking for. You can also start a slideshow of the collection by just hitting the play button. Icons for additional features are displayed subtly at the top, which disappear after a few seconds to allow you to view the images without any distraction.

The Good

– Vast collection
– High quality images
– Good categorisation
– Location Category
– Art Near Me

The Not So Good

– It would be good to have an overall Search, rather than just under each category.

The Verdict

Art Authority is a must-have app for anyone who has even the slightest interest in art. The pictures are of very high quality which look beautiful on crisp retina screens. For only $4.99, it’s great value for money. Download it today from App Store.
