A recent tweet from a senior reporter at The Information mentions Apple working on building hardware to integrate with the new HomeKit software announced at WWDC for iOS 8. Similar claims are also made by 9to5Mac in their recent report.
There is still no clarity and information on which devices Apple plans to work on, but according to these sources Apple has already readied a team that will work on various hardware products for the home. These products will integrate with the existing array of Apple devices that are currently available in the market. Apple TV, an already available household product can act as a logical hub for Homekit and Home Automation System. Besides AppleTV, iPhone and iPad can also be used to control the functionality of most of the Home Automation devices.
According to the sources, Apple has no plans to compete with Google’s recent acquisition Nest, as the company feels it can build its own products which will have a much wider usage option than Nest’s thermostats and smoke detectors. Apple is also working on advanced speaker systems or control panels for homes. It’s quite possible this vision was behind Apple’s recent acquisition of Beats Electronics.
This September, it is expected Apple will launch the new iPhone 6, iWatch and Macs but Hardware related to Home Automation is farther down Apple’s product Roadmap.
