UYH Gold for iOS – Time To Put Away Your Keyboards?

uyhFor those users who don’t get along with their keyboards or have a difficult relationship with Siri, here is a tool which lets you write with a flourish of a finger. Use Your Handwriting does exactly what it says: you can write messages and notes in your own handwriting, as bad as it may be. Just tap to add a new note across ten categories – ranging from work to holiday – and write as much as you like and as quickly as you can. You can e-mail these notes and even tweet or “share” them on Facebook.

So far so good. But the cracks start appearing as soon as you deviate even slightly from regular use. For instance, tapping three times in quick succession for carriage return doesn’t always work. After using the eraser the colour of the text changes to default red. So you may find a note written in half-yellow, half-red. Even when the entire text is erased the software doesn’t recognise it as a deleted note and saves it as a blank entry. Scrolling to a new page as you write sometimes works too quickly, other times too slowly. This, to an extent, is resolved by the “Hyper-write mode” but that comes with its own flaws. Also, when sharing via e-mail, the notes are sent as an image rather than a list which can be quite inconvenient. Unlike the default Notes app there is no provision to view all your note headings in one list. Another minor annoyance is that you can only use the app in landscape mode on iPhone.
There are features which make the tool more handy such as setting an alarm per note, syncing to iCloud, publishing as web page or even using a calligraphic pen. But these upgrades come at a steep price of £4.99, which would be reasonable if the app provided text-recognition.

The compulsive list makers may enjoy this app, but most users would find themselves going back to Notes with its auto-correction and auto-completion. The novelty value of UYH Gold is undeniable, but its usefulness is debatable.
