Yesterday, Twitter officially announced that ads are now coming to the Twitter applications for the two most popular mobile platforms Twitter is used on, Android and iOS, unlike their previous policy which stated that there would be ads in the mobile version of their twitter website only which would be accessible via mobile.twitter.com.
This will be much more ‘visible’ to all Twitter application users (iOS, Android) than Twitter’s recently announced “Promoted Tweets” that helps marketers bring out ads and reach users by directly placing them in their feeds. To calm down the Twitter App users a bit, Twitter says that you will only see ads related to what you like, this information will be extracted by the accounts you follow. The promoted tweets will appear in your timeline, on the top, if any are available from the people you follow.
Here’s what Twitter said:
- Promoted Tweets will appear in your timeline like any other Tweet, and like regular Tweets, they will appear in your timeline just once; as you scroll, the Promoted Tweet will flow with the rest of the Tweets in your timeline.
- As with Promoted Tweets in search, we will only display Promoted Tweets in the timeline when they are relevant. If you see a Promoted Tweet that isn’t relevant to you, you can easily dismiss it from your timeline with a single swipe.
- Promoted Accounts appear in your list of Who to Follow recommendations.
Many already hate the Twitter iOS App and have already adapted to third party Apps like Tweetbot. This move is sure to help Tweetbot and other increase sales.
For Android users, the Twitter app finally gets swipe gestures and better performance and compatibility with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
